Archival Data Analysis and Meta-Analysis

In most, if not all, of today’s societies, the average age of marriage for men is two to three years older than the average age for women. Is this a recent phenomenon or has it existed for centuries? Do assault weapons laws actually reduce crimes committed with assault weapons? Do children in grade school learn as well in a class with twenty other children as in a class with thirty, or even forty? Are some societies ravaged with war much more than others? These are some of the questions addressed by the data collection methods explored in this chapter.

Chapter 9 concentrated on data collected by asking subjects to complete questionnaires, either directly or by way of an interviewer. In chapter 10, the focus was on data directly observed by researchers. The final sources for social science data are those obtained primarily from organizations such as government agencies as well as from researchers who are able to synthesize and build on research already conducted by others. An abundance of criminal justice data is collected and stored by governmental agencies. The main types of data to be explored in this chapter are archival data, cross-cultural atlases, and meta-analyses. Before examining these types of data, it is helpful to discuss the concept of a unit of analysis.
